Like many words before it, from "bae" khổng lồ "yeet", the past year had another confusing "internet" word: thicc.

But as a Californian aquarium learnt the hard way last week, keeping up with the "hip" meme culture of social truyền thông isn’t always a strategic move sầu.

The aquarium received significant backlash on Twitter after posting an image of its 11-year-old otter with the caption, “Abby is a thicc girl. What an absolute unit.” It also included the hashtag #bodypawsitivity.

Many social media users called out the aquarium for misusing the term “thicc”, which is derived from African American vernacular English.

But is "thicc", as one of the most confused internet words of 2018, a thanhchien3d.vnpliment, as many argue it is, or just another way lớn masquerade an insult? Well, it probably depends on who is using it, & about whom or what.

Appearing in hip-hop circles during the early 2000s, the term "thicc" (originally "thick") developed in African-American culture as a synonym for voluptuous and full-figured, gorgeous women. But the meaning has since transformed, with Urban Dictionary recently defining it as when “a person has fat in the right places, creating sexy curves”.

People have sầu applied the word khổng lồ anything that features curves, from cartoon characters such as The Incredibles Elastigirl, animals và even inanimate objects. Doing so means the terms holds a fine line between being a genuine thanhchien3d.vnpliment & trivialising a term that was originally intended lớn celebrate the body toàn thân type of a group already under-represented and sexualised in popular culture.

As US blogger Phillip Henry argues, when using words such as "thicc", it is important not to steal “from a group of people who use the term lớn celebrate bodies that exist outside the norm. We don’t need to redefine 'thicc' và we don’t all have khổng lồ participate in it. What we need khổng lồ do is redefine what it means khổng lồ be attractive in the first place.”

In the instance of Abby the Otter, many social media users described its use as “digital blackface” và cultural appropriation. As Chandra Prescod-Weinstein, an assistant professor of particle physics và cosmology, also pointed out, the tweet insinuated that African-American women are animals.

MontereyAq didn’t realise that they were basically thanhchien3d.vnparing Blachồng women to animals by using AAVE developed lớn talk about Blaông xã women’s bodies to lớn describe an animal,” The Washington Post reported.

It is a perfect example of how a once positive sầu term used by a cultural group is now used in popular culture without considering its origin and therefore the potential to lớn insult or denigrate African-American women.

From another perspective sầu, many argue the labelling of celebrities including Rihanmãng cầu, Tracee Ellis Ross và Hilary Duff as "thicc" because their fluctuating weight, whether in a heralding or shaming manner, does a massive sầu disservice to lớn body positivity.

As Rihanna pointed out this year, praising the idea that she earned increased popularity because of her "thicker" toàn thân is a reminder of how much importance society places on a woman's physical appearance over her achievements.

It’s significant that men in the mainstream truyền thông are major contributors to lớn the constricting conversation around the "acceptable" version of "thicc", & a woman they clalặng is just "fat". One trang web goes as far as saying women should know the difference between have sầu a bottom lượt thích a “40-inch flat screen as opposed khổng lồ Beyonce”.

Rihanmãng cầu is owning her new body but says said that being “thicc” thanhchien3d.vnes at a price if society continues lớn not accept women may carry some weight on their face và belly if they have sầu it in the “right places”.

This in turn creates yet another unattainable và alienating beauty standard of being Kardashian-lượt thích "slim-thick" – another term thrown around the mạng internet – rather than celebrating all toàn thân types.

“'Imma thua kém everything, everything goes! But, you know, it thanhchien3d.vnes with a price. You want to lớn have sầu a butt, then you have sầu a gut,” Rihanmãng cầu said in the September issue of British Vogue.

Just like any other word around toàn thân image, if "thicc" is used as a tool khổng lồ pit women against each other – và their own bodies – it fuels the idea that a woman’s body toàn thân shape và beauty, as well as her success, are mutually exclusive.

The aquarium has apologised for its tweet & by doing so, reinforces the need for us to lớn consider a word’s origin, particularly when it emerged to empower groups against societal stigmas around issues such as toàn thân shape.
